Accounting and corporate reporting – an essential update

15 October 2014

Is your annual report fair, balanced and understandable? Answering this question in the affirmative, listed company directors must consider many issues.

This is not just about the ‘back half’ of the accounts, though there are plenty of challenges there: new requirements on revenue recognition and financial instruments impairment to name but a few. The focus of users and regulators is much broader. The new Strategic Report requirements emphasise the need to discuss performance in the context of the metrics used to run the business and explain the key judgements made in preparing accounts. More broadly, existential questions continue to be posed about the purpose of an annual report. What concepts should underpin financial reporting? What does it mean to be ‘true and fair’? Is financial performance still the appropriate lens through which to assess a company, or should a report seek to balance that with the creation and consumption of other values? Listed company directors are at the forefront of wrestling with these questions.
